Burwell (Population 6150)

Burwell is a vibrant village within easy reach of Ely, Newmarket and Cambridge. Worth a visit is the Museum of Fen Edge Village Life, complete with restored windmill, open Thursday and Sunday afternoons. St Mary's Church dates from Anglo-Saxon times, with Norman and Medieval additions, and local historians claim that the 'wicked baron', Geoffrey de Mandeville was killed by an arrow fired by a sniper from the church tower. The earthworks from the site of Burwell castle can still be seen on nearby Spring Close.

A series of historical information plaques have been placed around the village giving details of important sites. There is also a booklet, Discovering Burwell, available from the post office, which gives routes of four circular walks around the village and along the attractive lodes which date back to Roman times, with interesting details about the buildings and areas on the way.
